How to book your B1 English test

Book through the test provider's own visa (SELT) booking page, not a general English test. Here's where to go for each test and what to have ready.

Where to book

  • Trinity GESE Grade 5: Trinity's B1 page, then "Book your B1 (GESE Grade 5)". Trinity has over 20 UK test centres and tests seven days a week. Phone 0333 358 3183.
  • IELTS Life Skills B1: through the IELTS for UKVI pages. Make sure you choose Life Skills B1, not IELTS for UKVI Academic or General Training.
  • PTE Home B1: from Pearson's PTE Home B1 page. Choose B1, not A1 or A2.
  • LANGUAGECERT ESOL SELT B1: from LANGUAGECERT's B1 page, or by phone on 020 3564 7044.

Mistakes that cost people their test

  • The wrong name. Book in exactly the name on the ID you'll bring. A mismatch can mean you aren't allowed to sit the test.
  • The wrong level or version. Check it says B1 and that it's the UK visa (SELT) version.
  • Forgetting the GESE topic form. Trinity won't let you take Grade 5 without your completed topic form.
  • Booking too early. A result is generally accepted for two years from the test date, so time it for your application.
  • Booking B1 when you need B2. For most settlement applications made on or after 26 March 2027, B1 isn't enough. Check the deadline.

On the day

Follow your provider's identification instructions exactly. Bring the original document registered for your booking, or follow its eVisa and share-code procedure if you booked using an eVisa. Check the rules for expired BRPs and BRCs: their acceptance is time-limited. For Trinity Grade 5, also bring your completed topic form. Arrive at the time stated in your booking confirmation and follow the centre's rules on personal belongings.
