Using a B1 test for settlement before 26 March 2027
For most settlement routes that ask for English, the level rises from B1 to B2 for applications made on or after 26 March 2027. Before that date, a B1 speaking and listening test still meets the requirement on those routes.
It's the application date that counts
The level depends on when you submit your application, not when you took the test. A B1 result taken now works for an application made before 26 March 2027. It won't meet the B2 requirement for an application made on or after that date, even though the result is valid for two years.
Who still uses B1 before the deadline
- Partners and parents under Appendix FM, and other routes covered by Appendix KoLL.
- Partners and children of Skilled Workers applying as dependants (Appendix Skilled Worker, SW 44.1).
Skilled Worker main applicants are different: they have no separate settlement English requirement for an application made before 26 March 2027. From that date they need B2 unless exempt.
A few routes keep B1 after the deadline too, including Hong Kong BN(O), Domestic Workers in a Private Household, and families of HM Armed Forces members.
Applying close to the deadline
Some settlement routes allow applications up to 28 days before the qualifying period ends. Check the rule and guidance for your route before applying. Every other settlement requirement still has to be met, and a regulated adviser can help if you're unsure.
The B1 tests that count
Trinity GESE Grade 5, IELTS Life Skills B1, PTE Home B1 and LANGUAGECERT International ESOL SELT B1, taken at an approved centre. Compare them and see how to book.
