IELTS Life Skills B1 · Listening

IELTS Life Skills B1 Phase 2a: listening practice

You listen to two short recordings. After the first play the examiner asks what each is about; after the second play you answer detail questions out loud.

Try it

For this solo exercise, listen to both recordings once and answer the shared question for each. Then listen to both recordings again and answer the detail questions. In the real test, each candidate answers the shared question about one recording, then two detail questions about the other recording. Say your answers aloud.

Where is this person going to stay? (in a holiday cottage, at a campsite, in a hotel)

Show the answer

in a holiday cottage

Margaret owns Rose Cottage and explains the key box, the heating and the fire for the Walshes' week there. There is no reception or room service, and they will sleep indoors rather than in a tent, so the hotel and the campsite are wrong.

Fresh eggs and bread are sold at the ___.

Show the answer

farm shop

Margaret says there is a farm shop at the end of the lane selling fresh eggs and bread. The garden is where the wood for the fire is kept, so it is not a place to buy food.

There is space for two cars next to the ___.

Show the answer

gate

Guests must not park on the soft grass, but there is space for two cars next to the gate. The front door is where the key box is, so it describes a different place at the cottage.

Where is this person going to stay? (in a holiday cottage, at a campsite, in a hotel)

Show the answer

at a campsite

Tess has booked a campsite near the festival, and they will sleep in their tent with a warm sleeping bag. She explains that the hotels were full or too expensive, so a hotel is wrong, and no cottage is mentioned.

Joe should bring a warm ___.

Show the answer

sleeping bag

Tess says nights will be a bit cold, so Joe should bring a warm sleeping bag. The tent is something they are already taking, and the shop on site means they don't need to carry much food.

Each person will pay ___ pounds a night.

Show the answer

ten

The pitch costs twenty pounds a night, and Tess says that makes it ten each. Twenty is the total for the pitch, not what one person pays, so it is the trap in this question.
