LANGUAGECERT ESOL SELT B1 Part 4a: listening practice
The examiner plays a short talk twice. You have ten seconds to read three questions first, can make notes, and answer the questions out loud.
Try it
You will hear a woman called Mia talking about a family party. You'll hear the talk twice. You have 10 seconds to read the three questions first, and you can make notes while you listen. Then answer each question aloud in one to three words.
1. How old was Mia's grandad?
Show the answer
ninety
Mia says 'my grandad turned ninety' in June. Forty is how many years he played cricket at the club and sixty is roughly how many guests shouted 'Surprise!', so both are numbers from other details of the party.
2. Where was the party?
Show the answer
the cricket club
They 'hired the hall at the cricket club' because he played there for years. The pub is where her uncle took him for lunch to keep him away, so it's where he was before the party, not where it happened.
3. What shape was the cake?
Show the answer
a cricket bat
Mia made the cake 'in the shape of a cricket bat'. Balloons and old photos were the decorations in the hall, so they describe how the room looked rather than the shape of the cake she spent a day making.
